Did somebody try to fill in the steel frame/trim it out by ripping an old door lengthwise? Or was that elevator once meant to be way more decorative?

That elevator goes to one of two places. It either takes you to a decrepit underground labyrinth as a one way trip, or it takes you to the swankiest, jazziest lounge this side of prohibition.

not sure, its not part of our project, it was just a creepy looking thing sitting in the corner. I wouldn’t step foot in it

It was probably finished out in bead board trim at one point, that was like the T111 of the preWWII era. Kind of fancy now, but cheap then. Probably had a folding metal gate on it at one point.

That’s how they were. I went in a building in SF that used to be a warehouse. Giant beams and all brick inside. The frieght elevator was all wood, we put stuff in it and then took the stairs.
